RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas shocked gold medal favorite Allyson Felix to win a thrilling women's 400m final at the Rio Olympics on Monday.

Miller recorded a personal best of 49.44 seconds to finish just seven hundredths of a second ahead of the USA's Felix. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica took bronze in 49.85.

Miller led by several meters at the final bend but had to withstand a late charge from Felix before diving over the finish line.

Slow motion replays showed the 22-year-old's outstretched arms were just ahead of Felix.

Overcome with emotion, Miller remained on the ground for several minutes after her victory.

"This is the moment I have been waiting for, I just gave it my all. Such emotions I just can't say," said Miller.

"I've been going through so much this year. Everyone at home will all be celebrating this victory," she added.

Earlier at the Olympic Stadium, Kenya's David Rudisha romped to victory in the men's Olympic 800m final, securing his second straight gold medal in the event.

The 27-year-old clocked 1 minute 42.15 seconds to finish 0.45 of a second ahead of Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi.

Rudisha's time was 1.24 seconds slower than the world record he set when winning gold at the London 2012 Olympics.

"The feeling in my body was good. It is great to win such a big competition, my second gold. It's the greatest moment of my career," said the Kenyan.

In men's pole vault final, unheralded Brazilian Thiago Braz Da Silva sent the home crowd wild as he trumped France's defending Olympic champion Renaud Lavillenie to win the gold.

In a thrilling competition in which Lavillenie was jeered every time he vaulted, Da Silva won gold with an Olympic record of 6.03 metres.

Elsewhere, Britain's Charlotte Dujardin won her second individual dressage gold on her horse Valegro, which is the 16th gold for Britain.

She became the first British woman to retain an individual Olympic title and is now Britain's joint most-decorated female athlete in the Games.

In gymnastics, star Siomone Biles lost to nobody but her own mistakes as she failed to grab the balance beam gold.

As the world champion in this event, Biles reached the final with the highest score in qualification. However, the 19-year-old talent nearly fell off the beam after doing a front tuck and she had to touch the beam with both hands to keep her balance.

Biles finally placed third in 14.733 points while Dutch Sanne Wevers turned her silver medal at last year's World Championships to a shinning gold in 15.466 points.

"I'm not disappointed in the medal that I received because anyone would love to have a bronze at an Olympic Games," said Biles, who had collected three gold medals at Rio.

"I'm disappointed in the routine that I did. Not so much the entire routine just the front tuck I guess, because the rest of the routine was pretty good."

But Biles still have the chance to chase her fourth Olympic gold in the floor exercise.

Earlier, world champion Eleftherios Petrounias from Greece claimed the gold of men's rings while in the men's vault final, Ri Se Gwang of DPR Korea triumphed in 15.691 points winning the second gold for DPR Korea at Rio.

After Monday's finals, the United States tops the medals table with 26 golds, followed by Britain and China on 16 and 15 respectively.

Russia pushed hard on medals table with boxer Evgeny Tishchenko winning heavyweight 91kg gold while Davit Chakvetadze claiming men's Greco-Roman 85kg wrestling gold. Russia is now fourth on the medals table with 11 golds.
