MANAUS, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The company in charge of laying and maintaining the Arena da Amazonia pitch in Manaus has described as "fanciful" reports that paint was used to hide damaged turf.
Portuguese firm Red, which is responsible for the pitch in a partnership with Rio de Janeiro-based Greenleaf Gramados, guaranteed it would be ready for England and Italy's World Cup Group D clash on Saturday.
"Paint the field? It's a lie," Red spokesman Miguel Bastos told Maisfutebol. "What the pictures show is a spray.
"We already know how the British tabloids are. It's totally fanciful news. These are sprays. It is impossible to paint the grass with a spray of 50 litres. The employee is only to apply the product in the affected areas to grow grass."
Photographs taken during the week showed brown lines and apparent uneven patches on the playing surface.
Bastos said the problem was only aesthetic, blaming Manaus' steamy climate and drainage problems for the arid appearance.
He said the pitch would be in prime condition for the United States-Portugal Group G clash on June 22.
"Unless there is another storm before then, the pitch will be in great condition," he added.
BRASILIA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- The president of the European Commission (EC), Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, Friday called for concluding negotiations and finalizing a free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market ( Mercosur).
In an address at Brazil's University of Brasilia, where he was presented with an honorary doctorate, Durao said it was time that more than decade-long talks with Mercosur nations Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Venezuela concluded in a deal.
Such an agreement would represent an increase of 5 billion U.S. dollars in the gross domestic product (GDP) of Mercosur nations, and a nearly 40 percent increase in their exports to Europe.
The two sides were scheduled to meet at the beginning of this year to exchange proposals as part of the agreement, but the gathering was repeatedly postponed.
"The Mercosur and the EU have been 'engaged' for more than 15 years. Isn't it time to take the next step and make it official?", said Durao, using language usually reserved for two people who have put off getting married.
"Brazil has a leadership role here. We know that it wants to make progress, but we also know that it does not decide alone and that the pace of other Mercosur members are different," he acknowledged.
"It's important not to waste time however, because we could end up being last," added Durao, alluding to other trade agreements being negotiated by the EU.
According to the Mercosur bloc, it has been ready to meet for some time, but its European counterpart has put off presenting its proposals on various occasions.
The Portuguese-born Durao, who met privately earlier in the day with Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff at the presidential residence, is set to step down from his EC post in August to make way for the Luxembourger Jean-Claude Juncker, who was elected to replace him this week.
Durao is scheduled to visit Rio de Janeiro through Monday to meet with Brazilian political and business leaders.
BEIJING, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The United States will deploy its THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea, claiming that the shield can deter threats from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. But don't be fooled. The superpower isn't acting in the interest of South Korea but has intent on serving its own agenda.
About two weeks ago, South Korea's defense ministry announced an agreement with the United States to place a battery of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system in its southern region, despite repeated opposition from local residents and neighboring countries.
THAAD is developed by the U.S. defense company Lockheed Martin. It is a U.S. Army anti-ballistic missile system designed to shoot down short and medium range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase. It is composed of six mobile launchers, 48 interceptors and a radar and fire control system valued at about 1.3 billion U.S. dollars.
Under the South Korean-U.S. deal, the THAAD battery will be operated by the U.S. Forces Korea and the radar operation will not be made transparent.
China and Russia have expressed strong opposition to the THAAD deployment as its X-band radar can spot Chinese and Russian territories far beyond the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
The ANTPY-2 early missile warning radar can detect a 600-800 km range with a terminal mode, w. |
